maybe you could give pets away in events that would follow you around and just look cool or maybe you could have it as a pm system where every one has a pet ( Bat Rat Cat Dog Wolf Snake Owl Crow Ferret or something else along those lines) and it could go to the person you sent it to .

Perhaps it'd be a monsterlike NPC, besides following you around it can also be controlled as if it was permoveo-ed.

Maybe it can level with you.
It should probably be able to die.
